Common Name: Horseshoe Crab
Scientific Name: Limulus polyphemus
Ecosystem Role: Essential for coastal ecosystems. As benthic scavengers, they consume decaying organic matter, significantly in nutrient cycling and sediment bioturbation. Their resilient shells provide critical hard substrate in soft-bottom environments, supporting the growth of diverse epibiontic marine organisms such as mussels, barnacles, and seaweeds, thereby enhancing local biodiversity.


Ecology and Distribution: Found primarily along the Atlantic coasts of North America, ranging from Maine to Florida, and extending into the Gulf of Mexico. They are also found along the shores of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Rare vagrant sightings have been documented as far north as Canada and as far south as Panama.
